Meet the Stars

OUR MAGICAL REINDEER

Did you know that caribou and reindeer, though often mistaken for one another, have very different roots? Caribou are native to North America, while reindeer originated in northern Europe and Asia, migrating across regions like Sweden, Siberia, Norway, and Finland. To understand how these iconic animals made their way to North America, we need to look back in history.

In the late 1800s, Native Alaskan communities were struggling as whaling ships and outside hunters depleted their natural resources. In response, a federal program was launched in 1890 to introduce reindeer from Siberia to Alaska, providing these communities with resources for food, clothing, transportation, and employment as herdsmen. Today’s North American reindeer are descendants of these Siberian imports, and the reindeer at Northern Lights Ranch continue that legacy.

Our first reindeer, Atlas was born in May 2023. With soulful eyes and a calm curiosity, he carries himself with pride as he roams alongside Mabel, his mini pony companion. His gentle nature and enduring loyalty have made him a treasured part of our growing ranch family.

In contrast, our younger bull Sterling, is a joyful bundle of energy and wonder! Prancing through fields with his fuzzy nose high in the air. Always alert and attentive, Sterling is often the first to greet visitors with boundless curiosity. Watching him grow and develop his own unique personality has been one of our greatest joys.

We are filled with admiration and gratitude as we continue to welcome new reindeer into our lovable herd and we can't wait to share them with you!

Teddy

Teddy 2021-2025

We have a sad update for our Northern Lights Family. Teddy did pass away this September from bacterial pneumonia, often referred to as Alpaca Fever. We offer special thanks to our talented veterinarian team who tried so hard to save our sweet boy. His passing still serves the ranch family he loved so much, in that we can continue to learn and progress in the best interests of our furry family. While we continue to look for a new friend for Carlos and Joe, Teddy will never be replaced.

Carlos

The Heartbeat of the Herd.

Carlos is the quiet observer of the alpaca herd. He is always watchful and taking in the world with careful consideration. Always  sensitive and thoughtful, Carlos finds comfort in the company of his friends—you’ll never find him alone! Whether grazing peacefully or keeping an eye on the latest ranch activity, Carlos brings a steady and loyal presence to Northern Lights Ranch.

Joe Dirt

Party in the Pasture.

Joe Dirt might have the ranch’s most unforgettable hairstyle, but it’s his friendly nature that steals the show. With his signature mullet and snowy coat, he’s always ready to make new friends. Nose boops and complete disregard for your personal space are his ways of offering a hello. The most laid-back guy of the herd, Joe Dirt is up for just about anything and happily goes wherever you lead. Whether you’re giving him ear scratches or snapping a photo, he’s the definition of easygoing charm.

Anna

Bold, Bright and Beloved.

Named after a remarkable Grandmother, Anna carries her name with pride and spirited determination. Born in spring 2025, this young reindeer is cautious but makes decisions with surprising speed and confidence. Anna knows exactly what she likes and once she sets her mind on something, nothing stands in her way. She loves with her whole heart, bringing warmth, loyalty, and true devotion to everyone she bonds with. Anna is a shining example of courage, determination, and love in our herd.

Mabel

Heart of a Matriarch, Spirit of a Rascal.

Named after another amazing Grandma, Mabel is our spunky mini pony with a whole lotta heart- and maybe a little mischief. Always the first to investigate, Mabel makes sure no hoodie string goes unchewed and no tool is safe while we're working nearby.

Mabel adores attention, lives for treats and is not shy about demanding BOTH. Whether she's playfully tugging on my pockets or nosing her way into the spotlight, Mabel brings joy, laughter and just the right amount of sass. With a baby (hopefully) on the way, she's got all the makings of a loving Momma- and a show stealer at every event.

Freya

Fast, Fun and Fearlessly Friendly.

Freya, a name inspired by her Viking roots, is a spirited young reindeer born in spring 2025. Fast, fun, and full of energy, she’s always ready to explore and make new friends. Her friendly, approachable nature makes her a favorite among both humans and herd members alike. Whether racing across the pasture or greeting visitors with curiosity and charm, Freya brings joy, excitement, and a touch of Nordic spirit to Northern Lights Reindeer.

Noel

Sweet, Soft and Sociable.

Noel is the sweetest soul of the herd, a gentle spirit who wins hearts at every turn. Born in spring 2025, she’s small in size but enormous in affection—if she could fit in your pocket, she would! A special opportunity from a friend in New York, Noel is the most docile and tender of the girls, always running right to greet you. She loves being part of the “people pack,” soaking up attention, and spreading calm and joy wherever she goes.
